About us
EXPLOLABS Certification Services (Pty) Ltd (Also referred to as “ExCS”) operates in the field of explosion prevention, electrical apparatus and mechanical equipment. We perform certification and inspections on new or in-service and / or repaired explosion protected electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical equipment (also referred to as Ex equipment, Ex apparatus or EPA) for compliance with South African National Standards and where relevant international standards.
ExCS offers audit and certification services with personnel that is experienced and technically strong in the Electro-technical & mechanical sector.
Even though ExCS operates strong in the product certification scheme, due to its specialized experience, we also have the capability and required recognition to provide Management system related certification, such as: ISO 9001; ISO 45001 & ISO 14001.
ExCS have SANAS accreditation, accreditation number: C124; have D.M.R.E (Department of Mineral, resources & energy) approval; ECB (Electrical conformance board of SA), number: 31320; and only Product certification body with SAIOSH (South African institute of occupation safety & health) as corporate membership.
ExCS is one of the only certification bodies in the African continent that can offer internationally accredited specialised field certification based on international standards, such as the following:
- SANS/IEC 62619 Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – _Safety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries, for use in industrial application.
- SANS/IEC 60034-1 Rotating electrical machines Part 1 – Rating and performance.
- SANS/IEC 60034-2-1 Rotating electrical machines Part 2-1 – Standard methods for determining losses and efficiency from tests.
- SANS/IEC 60034-23 Rotating electrical machines Part 23 – Repair, overhaul & reclamation.
- SANS/IEC 60034-30-1 Rotating electrical machines Part 30-1 –Efficiency classes of line operated

The ExCS Product Certification Mark Scheme
The ExCS mark on a product indicates that such product has been manufactured (or repaired, where relevant) under controlled conditions and provides a high degree of confidence that the product conforms with the standard or standards covered by the certification.
This confidence is based on compliance of the scheme with ISO Guide 17065, being commercially and technically independent of the manufacturer, and employing experts on quality and Equipment technology. By means of regular audits on the manufacturing or repair process and tests on production units, ExCS ensures that this process has as few flaws as possible and that potential problems are identified and rectified at an early stage.
For Explosion proof certification - End users of explosion-protected products, new or repaired, require assurance that the particular products used by them comply with the specified standards. Vice versa, product suppliers need proof of such compliance. Certification of a product is the preferred means of providing this assurance.
Because of the enormous hazard associated with explosions caused by flammable gases, vapours and dust in factories and mines, third-party (independent) certification is legally required in South Africa and in most industrialized countries.
The users of mark-bearing products also play a valuable role in the quality chain by providing feedback on in-the-field performance of mark-bearing products.
ExCS operate in the following sectors of product certification (new or repaired), but not limited to:
- All types of Explosion (Ex) protected equipment (National & International Standards);
- Rotating machines, such as: Electric motors (Low voltage; Medium-High voltage); submersible pumps; DC motors; etc.
- Cable glands;
- Luminaires;
- Fuel dispenser units/systems;
- Earth rods & systems;
- Secondary battery systems for industrial use;
- Diesel engines refurbishment;
- Transformers (Distribution & power transformers).

The ExCS System Certification Scheme
EXPLOLABS Certification Services (Pty) Ltd also provides other approved and recognized certification services such as the following:
- ISO 9001, Quality management systems audit & certification;
- ISO 45001, Occupational Health & safety management system audit and certification;
- ISO 14001, Environmental management system audit and certification.
The above-mentioned management system audit & certification services are recognized by the D.M.R.E under the ExCS regulatory approval obtained by the D.M.R.E.
ExCS is also in the process of finalising its official accreditation with SANAS for ISO 9001, which is then additional creditability to our current recognised and approval status.
The symbol displayed above, is an example of a symbol mark the company certified with ExCS for ISO 9001, may use to display, within the usage requirements.
Same symbol mark design is utilized for ISO 45001 & ISO 14001.
